The tale of Beren and Lúthien was, or became, an essential element in the evolution ofThe Silmarillion, the myths and legends of the First Age of the World conceived by J.R.R. Tolkien. Returning from France and the battle of the Somme at the end of 1916, he wrote the tale in the following year.

Essential to the story, and never changed, is the fate that shadowed the love of Beren and Lúthien: for Beren was a mortal man, but Lúthien was an immortal Elf. Her father, a great Elvish lord, in deep opposition to Beren, imposed on him an impossible task that he must perform before he might wed Lúthien. This is the kernel of the legend; and it leads to the supremely heroic attempt ofBeren and Lúthien together to rob the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor, called Morgoth, the Black Enemy, of a Silmaril.

In this book Christopher Tolkien has attempted to extract the story of Beren and Lúthien from the comprehensive work in which it was embedded; but that story was itself changing as it developed new associations within the larger history. To show something of the process whereby this legend of Middle-earth evolved over the years, he has told the story in his father's own words by giving, first, its original form, and then passages in prose and verse from later texts that illustrate the narrative as it changed. Presented together for the first time, they reveal aspects of the story, both in event and in narrative immediacy, that were afterwards lost.

John R. R. Tolkien, geb. am 3. Januar 1892 in Südafrika, in England aufgewachsen, früh verwaist, hat mit seiner Romantrilogie'Der Herr der Ringe'das Genre'Fantasy'überhaupt erst geschaffen. Er zeigte sich schon als Kind fasziniert von alten, längst vergessenen Sprachen und Mythen. In Oxford spezialisierte sich der Stipendiat, der seit Kindertagen in seiner Freizeit zum bloßen Zeitvertreib Alphabete kreierte und neue Sprachen komponierte wie andere MenschenMusikstücke, bald aufs Altenglische und beschäftigte sich vor allem mit mittelalterlichen Dialekten der westlichen Midlands. W.A. Craigie, ein Kenner besonders der schottischen Volksüberlieferungen, führte ihn in die isländischen und finnischen Sprachen und Mythologien ein. Das Finnische wie das Walisische wurden später Grundlage für die Elfensprache im Herrn der Ringe. 1924, gerade 32 Jahre alt, wurde Tolkien als Professor für englische Sprachen nach Oxford berufen und blieb mehr als vierzig Jahre.Mit Frau und Kindern lebte er in einem schmucklosen Reihenhaus am Rande der Stadt.<br />Tolkien ist 1973 gestorben, sein Fantasy-Land'Mittelerde'ist, obwohl literarisch inzwischen vielfach abgekupfert, der beliebteste literarische Abenteuerspielplatz für Kinder und Erwachsene geblieben.

Alan Lee was invited to illustrate the centenary edition ofThe Lord of the Rings, which led to further Tolkien editions, includingThe Hobbitand the three'Great Tales':The Children of Húrin,Beren and LúthienandThe Fall of Gondolin. He worked as Conceptual Designer and Set Decorator on both Middle-earth film trilogies, receiving the Academy Award for Best Art Direction for his work onThe Return of the King.

Christopher Tolkien, born on 24 November 1924, was the third son of J.R.R. Tolkien. As his father's literary executor, he devoted over forty years to the publication of his father's unpublished works, fromThe SilmarillionandUnfinished TalestoBeren and LúthienandThe Fall of Gondolin, and within'The History of Middle-earth'series, and was awarded the Bodley Medal for his services to literature in 2016. He died in January 2020 at the age of 95.
