Described as "a creative documentary", Leaving Transylvania documents real-life events that have a surprising and direct relevance to contemporary Ireland. Though specific to its time and place the film's issues have a direct bearing on our Tiger economy and our historically unique rising tide of immigration.

Running at 52 mins 25 secs Leaving Transylvania was nearly five years in the making and is a glowing testament to the ability and determination of Dieter Auner. It is also very beautiful. Despite its grim and doleful sounding subject matter it is a love poem, in vivid colour, to Auner's original homeland.

Dieter Auner says, "This film explores the characteristics of the Transylvanian Saxons yet applies to a universal theme worth reflecting on: the disorientation of individuals experiencing their culture in decline." Dieter pretty much counts as a "local boy" as the former physics student left Germany for Galway in 1996 and is a well known and respected stills photographer with an impressive list of credits on everything from Ros na Run to Macnas, Druid and Cuirt. His solo photographic exhibitions include: "Have You Seen Dracula?" forGAF's 21st Birthday and shows in the USA, Germany and Romania.
